Dave, don't worry about the backfiring, that is the nature of the beast. I haven't seen a stock Savage that doesn't backfire. You can eliminate it by enriching the fuel/air mixture. Read all the carb and white spacer posts starting from the bottom of the list of posts on this site. A side benefit will be a noticeable power increase. Good luck with your Savage.
